Carbon Footprint

I recently ordered a day-sack cover from a company using Amazon. It arrived and I was somewhat shocked.

Packaging!
Packaging!

The rest of the box had that paper-stuff in it to hold the rain cover in place. I have written about this before in this communication.

While this sort of packaging excess does seem a waste I’ve got some other ideas. Fuel use for transporting goods is largely dependent on the mass of the object. So although the box added something to the mass it was still reasonably light and so not a huge carbon drain. If the box is recycled then it doesn’t really matter about how much cardboard there was. There’s probably more carbon used in making the plastic wrapper of the item than in the box, as long as the box comes from a sustainable source.

So, upon reflection this excessive packaging may not be as bad a first thought.

I do think that eventually everything will be labelled with a “carbon factor” to make people aware of just how much carbon they emit and how well we are fucking the planet. Because we are. It is fucked. Utterly fucked. I am glad I will be dead in one hundred years. There are going to be wars over water, food and power. I am just very sorry that my children, or potential grandchildren, will be involved in that and the people to blame will all be dead. My parents’ generation and mine have screwed this planet over.

I could be calmed, I guess, by fluffy cat or dog pictures. But they don’t distract me from the bullshit. They reinforce our collective ability to ignore all that is going on.

NAS Drive

At home I have a NAS drive for storing music, photos and films. It’s always on and over the last couple of months it has been making “bad” sounds. Now, I don’t often surround myself with dodgy HDD and so I wasn’t sure if it was making legitimate noises or about to die.

I logged into the Iomega ix2-200 CE on Sunday and the page that normally describes the status of the device declared that Disk 1 was having problems. The NAS Drive is kept in Raid 1 configuration by me so losing one disk isn’t much of a problem. I snuck over to Amazon and check what type I had ordered before when Disk 2 failed a few years ago. They had some of these in stock and so I clicked.

The HDD arrived Monday as expected and was quickly placed into the NAS Drive. It’s a simple affair of six screws and slide out the unit. Very simple. Once turned on the data protection was rebuilt and within three hours the system was back to operating normally.

There are a few points to note about the Iomega ix2-200 CE. Whoever now owns Iomega hasn’t maintained the legacy website. This means the NAS drive tries to check for firmware updates on a site that doesn’t exist. Whenever I log in to the UI I am told it can’t check for updates. This is somewhat tiresome. It wouldn’t take much to monitor the traffic to particular sites and maintain them. I have to manually upload an update file to the NAS for it to realise it is up to date. Once it is happy it allows me access to more functions!

Overall, I am still very happy with the device and see no need to move over to a larger or newer version. The box seems to work just fine.

Nonsensical

A while ago I ordered some drum sticks from Amazon. Actually I ordered two drum sticks. They came in a box the same size as the one below. I should have written about this then, but I failed to take any photographs. I was curious when the box arrived because I had hoped that the length of the drum sticks would have warranted a 3D Pythagoras problem, but no, they were just laying lengthways in the box.

A few days ago I ordered a vertical stand for my PS4. The PS4 has lived upright for quite a while and the official stand keeps being delayed from release and so I ordered an after-market version. Amazon very kindly delivered the stand the next day. The packaging was curious. I had expected [I hadn’t learn my lesson from the drumsticks] a layer of cardboard around the stand and then addressed on top, making it letterboxable.

This package was couriered by someone in a van and they had to knock on the door. It was most definitely not letterbox sized.

The internal dimensions were:

30cm x 40cm x 10cm

Giving a volume of 12,000 cm^3

The PS4 stand dimensions were:

1.5cm x 8.5cm x 37cm

Giving a volume of 472cm^3 [3sf]

This gives a spare capacity of 96%.

Now, this isn’t a sensible use of cardboard. It isn’t even a sensible use of space or time. However, the increased cost of delivery is probably minimal. This package requires someone to be home to accept the package, or at least a neighbour. As long as the company can deliver on the first pass then I don’t see a great deal of waste.

Trap Door

Amazon have upgraded their Prime membership [and charge more at the same time]. I think this has something to do with them buying LoveFilm and then rebranding the who shebang. Fair enough.

The streaming video service is now called Prime Instant Video. If you have a Prime subscription it now includes a number of free films and videos over the internet to a device with the right software. My television has the right software and so I can now watch this streaming service using the following devices in my house [if I wanted]:

  • Television
  • Tablet PC
  • PS3
  • PS4
  • iPhone
  • Tablet

It seems ridiculous that so many devices can be used to bring entertainment to me. What a wonderful world.

I’m not sure I’ll spend a lot of time watching streaming video, but if I do I will let you know. My boys, however, will watch this and we found ourselves browsing the free kids’ section over the weekend. The usual kids stuff was there:

  • Peppa Pig
  • SpongeBob Squarepants

We also found that the programme Trap Door was available. This was good news for me. I can remember watching it when it first came out. It was, for a while, my favourite programme and I really enjoyed it.

Trap Door

I have just checked and this show first came out in the mid-80s and so this fits in where I thought it did in my life [I was slightly worried that it might have been an early 90s thing, which would mean that I loved the show when I was at university, quite likely but worrying].

This show is worth watching. It’s short. Funny. Well scripted. Apart from the resolution I don’t think it has aged.

Give it a go.
